Luke Voit is Now a Yankee Because Chasen Shreve and Giovanny Gallegos Are Not

The Yanks didn't waste much time picking up a bat to help with picking up the slack in the lineup left by the injured Aaron Judge. They got rid of Chasen Shreve, a pitcher who they had no real use for anymore, and Giovanny Gallegos, one of the 21 RHP in their top 30 prospects, but who profiles as a reliever rather than a start. Relief prospects are a dime a dozen, so to grab a bat for this price ain't bad. The Yanks are, per usual, going to face a 40-man roster crunch come November, so dealing two relievers who could be on the cutting block is a smart maneuver.

Luke Voit's MLB stats over 137 PAs the past two years aren't all that great - .240/.307/.432. Only 13 of those PAs have come this year, 2 walks, a single, a homer, 2 Rs, 3 RBIs, and 4ks. Small sample size much?

Let's look at a more significant representation of dude's abilities.

2016 @ Springfield (AA): .297/.372/.477 over 546 PA with 19 HR and 74 RBIs.
2017 @ Memphis (AAA): .327/.407/.565 over 307 PA with 13 HRs and 50 RBIs.
2018 @ Memphis (AAA): .299/.391/.500 over 271 PA with 9 HRs and 36 RBIs.

Not bad! The guy hits, even if he hasn't turned it into real MLB success quite yet. He's got some reverse splits this season (.313/.401/.526 v. RHP, .237/.348/.441 v LHP), but I wouldn't read too much into it. Last year those splits were .307/.387/.495 v. righties and .289/.350/.622  against lefties. It'll all even out in the long run.

Anyway, I'm tired and uninterested in exploring this too much more at this point in time, but it is a good day baseball-wise for a Shreve-less Yankees team that now has a little bit of extra power to add to the roster.

Note: Shreve, by all accounts, seems like a real swell dude. It's just his stats and baseball ability that have me glad he's not hogging an active roster spot (or a 40 man for that matter) any longer.
